Dog on It A Chet and Bernie Mystery Chet and Bernie Mysteries Spencer Quinn Books Reviews
Chet is a hundred-plus-pound mongrel who didn't quite make it through K9 school. Bernie's a recently divorced, cash-strapped private eye who was a war vet as well as a Metro Police officer and still struggling with the separation from his wife and son Charlie. The setting of the story takes place in Arizona right before the subprime mortgage meltdown and an ungodly large amount of Americans were transplanting to "The Grand Canyon State." Chet the dog is the closest thing Bernie has to a stable family. Mr. Quinn has taken the unique approach of writing a serious mystery through the eyes of Chet. Like many dog owners, Bernie sometimes talks to Chet as if the dog would understand what's on his mind. Chet loves Bernie, but mostly his mind is preoccupied with smells, food and play.
What makes this book exceptionally entertaining is not only that it's a pretty decent whodunit and written well, but Chet's interpretation of events as they unfold are rarely accurate. He thinks like you'd imagine a dog would. A great deal of funny observations and miscommunication between Bernie and Chet make the story an entire joy throughout the book. The author's first Chet-and-Bernie mystery is a perfect mixture of humor, suspense and tenderness.
Over the past few years, I've read a handful of novels in which the dog is the narrator of the story. While most of them have been enjoyable, 'Dog On It' is by far my favorite. At the time of the writing of this review, Mr. Quinn has published five Chet-and-Bernie books. There are plenty of loose ends about Chet's and Bernie's past that could be expanded in further stories. I for one am most certainly going to read the other novels in this endearing buddy team.
Funny mystery novel from Chet the distractable dog's point of view.
Some grimness when Chet comes close to disaster - wouldn't a healthy dog be given more time than a couple days at a shelter for an owner to find it? I would hope so. But sometimes fiction timetables are compressed and Chet *is* an unreliable narrator so this quibble bags at me but does not ruin the story.
Have bought several copies now. Latest for my dog-living Airbnb hostess whose shelves lacked dog mysteries but were full up on mystery/thrillers otherwise. Got my reading copy, a signed copy, and a replacement for a signed copy that fittingly, a dog ate.
There is only one good reason to read this book it's written from the dog's point of view and he's a sweetheart. His owner, Bernie, however despite being a nice guy isn't very bright. The plot is drawn out and contrived with too many coincidences to resolve it. I figured out the general resolution very early on. Reading the preview of "Thereby Hangs a Tale" it doesn't seem to be any better.
This charming tale (er, tail?) of a man/dog detective partnership is light as air, and much more fun. What's most interesting is the point of view. It is the dog that tells the story. The dog's voice is genuinely doggy -- always ready to eat, always ready for a chase, fiercely loyal, and (dare we say it) perhaps a little dense. The man's character comes through strongly, and some of the subsidiary characters are surprisingly well developed in this book, I didn't forget who was who. The plot is perhaps a bit mechanistic, and more than a little improbable at times, but what the hey. It's a good dog story, told by a good dog.
What a clever book! Spencer Quinn’s Dog On It, the first of a series, features private investigator Brian and his partner Chet—his dog. The cleverness comes from the fact that Quinn has Chet tell the story. Dog lovers will find it very funny, indeed; I, being a curmudgeon who isn’t enamored of dogs, found it mildly amusing. The crime they are solving is nothing heavy. It is a suspected kidnapping, but there is very little violence in the solving—and, in fact, what violence exists is funny. Those who like Chet a lot will be delighted that there are several more books in the series. Enjoy!
This books are narrated from the view point of the main character, a private eye's dog named Chet. They are hilarious, suspenseful and very well written. I am on book number three in the sequence and am positively hooked! Buy these books and enjoy some great entertainment. It does make more sense to read them in sequence however the stories do hold up on their own. The occasional references to previous plots will make more sense if you read them in proper sequence.
This is not one of those "it's going to change your life" books. It is a quick, fun read with a clever and imaginative view of the world through the eyes of a dog. The dog, Chet, and his owner, Bernie, together form the Little Detective Agency, specializing in missing persons but frequently having to resort to divorce cases which they are always complaining about but are only peripheral to the story. The capabilities of Chet and Bernie are complementary so they make a good team, especially in Chet's opinion. Also, as you'd imagine in a real dog, Chet has nothing but good things to say about Bernie.
I finished this one a week or so ago and am now on book three in the series. It kind of grabs you so that we want to keep reading, not because of any suspense just because it is fun.
