Standiford does an excellent job of telling the story of the disappearance, murder and investigation of Adam Walsh and how retired DS Joe Matthews finally brought a measure of closure and justice to the Walsh family. The Hollywood PD, and especially lead investigator Jack Hoffman, totally messed this investigation up, whether through inexperience, ego, unwillingness to accept help from outside their PD, or the refusal to admit the many mistakes that were made in their investigation. It took almost 3 decades to finally have all the pieces actually looked at and pulled together, plus the gathering of new information, much that should have been obtained earlier if the right questions had only been asked, to prove that Ottis Toole, by then deceased himself, and who had confessed to police several years after Adam's death that he committed the crime, was guilty. Joe Matthews looked at all the information, gathered the new evidence, including 5 rolls of film of Tooles' car the Hollywood PD had never bothered to examine, and solved the case of who abducted and murdered Adam Walsh. Adams parents never gave up their hope for an answer, even in the face of an inept PD that they continued to have confidence in for a long time, but it took the skill, experience and perseverance of Joe Matthews to solve this case once he was given the chance to by John and Reve Walsh. Joe Matthews is an amazing person and an amazing detective.

I remember when Adam went missing, when John Walsh got involved in doing so much to help others who had missing children, and how much they've done to changes laws to help protect all our children. Their actions have helped so many people, kept other children safe, and with AMW helped to capture so many criminals who, left uncaptured, would have gone on to create more victims. Perhaps this was Adam's purpose in his short life, as none of this would have come about without his tragic abduction and death. Perhaps a different set of parents wouldn't have fought so hard to find their child's killer and also do so much to protect all children. If so, it was a noble purpose, a very important one, and perhaps that's why we'll never forget that sweet, smiling 6 year old face, will never stop grieving for him and his family, and will never forget how his tragic death has helped to protect others and to bring home so many other missing children. Thank you, Adam; your death was not in vain, though we grieve that that's what it took to open our eyes. We will never forget you.

Although I very much enjoyed reading this book about Florida's long delayed exercise of justice in the handling of the Walsh case, I do think the author's tendency to insert his own beliefs, explicitly or implicitly, may have detracted a bit from the story. For example, among the many witnesses who eventually "came out of the woodwork", the author mentions a "now elderly" lady who claimed to have seen - and smelled - Toole in the video section of the store with Adam (and, I think, maybe another boy or two) - a claim the author seemed to suggest might be credible given that Toole was known for his abominable body odor. Because this scenario of Toole being in the store did not "square" with information from other known witnesses (ie, the man in the parking lot, the female security guard who kicked Adam out of the store), I kept waiting for a "reveal" moment in which the author would present some new facts in support of the lady's claim - or, in the alternative, acknowledge and clarify this discrepancy. Also, while I am by no means a supporter of the Hollywood, Fl police department and the blatant incompetency of its officers, as depicted in this book, the author could have balanced his narrative a little by offeriñg the appropriate law enforcement officials an opportunity to provide some input - some rationale of their actions/inactions - as opposed to relying on 3rd party information. In the end, I do believe Toole was Adam's abductor & killer - and am glad the Walsh's were able to see this case solved in their lifetimes - due, in no small measure, to the dedicated work of Joe Matthews.
I remember hearing about Adam and the Walsh family, as this happened right after I graduated high school and was getting ready to enter the world as a young adult. Reading this book finally answered my own questions as to why Ottis Towle was never tried for this horrific crime. The pride of a novice homicide detective and tunnel vision of his team led to the most heartbreaking “unsolved” crime I’ve ever read about. I cannot even begin to understand what John and Reve’ went through all those years and to now know that everything to get justice for Adam was right in front of the police department all that time is astonishing. They knew that Joe Mathews was a dedicated and tenacious officer and a humble and loving family man who wanted dearly to bring some type of relief to them and they definitely made the right choice in asking him to study the case. I’m so grateful, yet somewhat angry that it took so long to finally have all the pieces put together. When reading about the pictures I literally gasped and shook my head. Ottis Toole was a despicable human but even he knew the horror of his crime and the fact that it haunted him until his last breath gives me only slight satisfaction. I am in complete awe at how John and Reve’ took charge of the situation and made the US more aware of the crimes against children and helped to launch so many worthwhile programs to give families of the missing other ways to investigate on their own. Hopefully no other police department will follow the course the Hollywood PD took and simply give up. We should never give up on protecting and locating the most innocent of humans - children.
