Freefall A High Risk Novel JoAnn Ross Books

The storyline in this book was messed up and disturbing. The second problem this book has is how poorly written the first 20 chapters are. Each chapter is from a different characters point of review. Most of those characters were not necessary. We didn't need to know what the victims were thinking and the two random kids in the car were irrelevant. All they had to do was die and find the body. We didn't need a life story. Once you get past all that it's much better but the storyline is still too creepy for me.

Freefall A High Risk Novel JoAnn Ross Books Reviews

good
The first of a series of four books. Great characters you would like to know.
One of a series, connected well with other 3 books and the characters are likeable. A lot of action, suspense and attraction between main characters.
Presents a realistic and unnerving view of PTSD. Fortunately the love story smooths the sharper edge. I loved it!
Sabrina Swann is living in Italy when she is involved in a life altering and terrifying event. Seeking a little break from her life she returns to her family tea plantation on the southern island, Swann Island.

Zach Tremayne has left the Navy SEALs and has also come home to Swan Island to recover from a traumatic situation. He is doing construction work for his father's company and he is pleasantly surprised at how Sabrina has grown up.

This is an engaging read and I enjoyed it, however, I didn't love it. There is so much going on in this story and for me it was way too much. First you have the tragic and separate events that bring Zach and Sabrina home. You have the romance between Sabrina and Zach, and then there is one between side characters Nate and Tatiana. Then you have a killer on the loose targeting women. Ms. Ross then sets up what I think is going to be a part of one of the future books with the addition of the reoccurring character, Cait Cavanaugh. There are also about 3 other 'stories' going on that I couldn't mention without spoiling a lot of the story.

The one thing that really lowered the rating on this book was the conclusion to one of the conflicts that is present throughout the story. It is literally discovered, confronted, and solved in 5 pages at the very end of the book. For me it was very anticlimactic and completely ridiculous. The other thing that lowered my rating for me was something that had to do with Tatiana, we never find out what really happened and it's kind of a big deal.

Despite the flaws I enjoyed this book; I am glad I read it and even glad I bought it. She does a fantastic job of setting up the sleepy southern town and making her characters come to life. I am looking forward to the next in the series, Crossfire (September 2008), which is going to feature Cait Cavanaugh and one for my favorite reoccurring characters, Brendan O'Neill, both of whom appeared in Out of the Storm (Stewart Sisters Trilogy) and Blaze.

Cherise Everhard, February 2008
This one is not my favorite of the series. It had a lot going on with several different characters. I did not feel like I connected with the H/H as a couple like I could have if there wasn't so much going on. Then it appeared that the ending was just wrapped up too nice and neat.

The story itself kept me intrigued and engaged just not connected, if that makes sense. I will read the next book. I think JoAnn Ross is a fantastic writer.
It was ordinary and predictable. Nothing surprised or delighted me. I didn't feel enough emotion or anticipation for the couple. At times I wished it would be over. But, it was still an ok read.

This is high intensity suspense with a perverted serial killer ("sicko") who keeps women in a cage, tortures them sometimes for weeks, and then kills them. Caution for sensitive readers repulsive and stomach-turning torture scenes.

Story Brief
Zach suffers post traumatic stress and left the military. He is working for his father's home construction business on Swan Island. Sabrina was managing a hotel in Italy when a terrorist bomb blew up the hotel, burying her under rubble. She survived and returned to her home on Swan Island for awhile. Sabrina and Zach start to fall in love as they soothe and help each other to heal. Dead bodies start turning up on the island, the work of a serial killer.

CAUTION SPOILERS

I was angry at the cliffhanger technique used in the beginning of the book. The author switched back and forth among three scenes, a military operation going badly in Afghanistan, a hotel bombing in Florence Italy and a serial killer torturing a woman. I don't mind switching among stories, but I hated the cliffhanger style, for example on page 7, a helicopter is hit with a rocket-propelled grenade. The next sentence is "Then all hell broke loose." Then the author switches to a scene at a hotel in Italy. At the end of that scene on page 14 there is an explosion, screams filled the air, "Sabrina felt herself falling. Then everything went black." The next sentence switches back to the military scene. There were six of these cliffhanger endings in the first 25 pages.

There was a touching and enjoyable scene at the end in which Sabrina has a conversation with Richard Cunningham.

Story length 375 pages. Sexual language strong/erotic. Number of sex scenes 9. Length of sex scenes 2 short scenes (less than 1 page) 6 medium scenes (1 to 3 pages) 1 long scene (9 pages). Setting current day Swan Island off the coast of South Carolina plus two short scenes in Afghanistan and Italy. Copyright 2008. Genre erotic romantic suspense with torture.
