Charmfall Dark Elite Book 3 Chloe Neill Books
Charmfall is, in a word, anticlimactic. Being the final book in the trilogy I was expecting more action and plenty of answers. Well, there's none of that. It is a super duper quick read just like the previous two books, but not much happens. Once again, something strange is happening in the magical community of Chicago and Lily and the rest of her enclave are trying to solve it. This time, their powers are gone. Luckily, their enemies' magic has also disappeared. But how and why?I did enjoy Charmfall while I was reading. I liked learning more about magic and the opposing sides' reasons for wanting more or giving it up. The plot was also fast paced, so it wasn't until it was over that I realized that there wasn't a whole lot of substance there. It was interesting, since magic up and disappearing is good stuff, but other than that there's planning a school dance and playing supernatural matchmaker. Neither of which were all that engaging.
The biggest disappointment was that Lily questioning her parents' real motives for sending her to St. Sophia's and what their real careers are was totally dropped. This was a major focus of the first two books, but I don't think Lily seriously thought about it once in Charmfall. Why are they studying DNA? What kind of DNA? Supernatural DNA? Why are they really in Germany? What is their connection to SRF? Do they know Lily is an Adept? Were they Adept? How does the headmistress fit into this? Nothing is answered! It's as if this plot thread never existed at all.
Charmfall is a weak ending to a not-so great series. I enjoyed the first book, but it all goes downhill from there. At first I thought maybe this wasn't the finale, but upon further research, it is. I feel like this series was a wasted opportunity. It had a great foundation: likeable characters, interesting mythology, and engaging mysteries. Unfortunately, nothing comes from it.

Charmfall Dark Elite Book 3 Chloe Neill Books Reviews
I should have known that any protagonist who claims on the first page to be the "best" vampire after having been created days earlier would be a dud. (I stopped reading on page 247. I should have stopped sooner. Or never bought it.).
Merit, the protagonist, is too stupid to live. Or in this case, too stupid to live and be reborn as a vampire. Her age is around 28 and she was a graduate student but acts like she's half that age. She doesn't act like an adult at all, instead pouting that she was made a vampire "against her will" when the other option was her death. So instead of being a little grateful she acts like a teenager throughout the entire book (at least to the part I read). And the amazing part is, for the most part, everyone puts up with it!
The only thing special about Merit is the fact that she has all these amazing powers after being reborn...which she takes for granted and doesn't learn how to wield. I have a very, very hard time believing (and another downfall of this book is the inability for the reader to suspend disbelief/reality and hop in the book. I can do this with the best of them but the only thing I wanted to do was slap Merit with said book) that a woman of Merit's mediocre caliber would be worthy of such powers.
The whole book is a walking vampire/paranormal/UF/fantasy cliche, complete with doormat best friend who happens to find out that she's a witch with the highest level of powers! What a neat coincidence!
I hated Merit and I couldn't feel a thing for any of the other characters. There was supposedly a mystery happening, connected to the way in which Merit was turned, but instead of focusing on that and the actual victims of the attacker, Merit complains about how her life has changed and how it's not fair to her and attacking the people who saved her rather than finding the person/vampire at fault. Woe is me, blah blah blah.
All in all, I can't believe I wasted time and money on this book. There are other books out there better than this (want a REAL kicka** heroine? Check out the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews). I won't continue the series and I will probably avoid any and all of Ms Neill's books in the future.
SPOILER ALERT. The writing is solid. Not like many of the indie authors who don't worry about grammer and editing. The first half of book one was promising. However, after reading all the books in the series through 2015, I'm still not attached to any of the characters. There is no emotional investment for me. I'm from the burbs, and while there are some basic Chicago details such as the Cubs, there's sooo much more to the city and suburbs that could be included. The woman-child protagonist has turned into an odd dichotomy. A ballerina with a katana, who loves baseballs - signed of course, $10 gourmet chocolate bars, and crap tv vs. the miracle vampire who will be able to breed, (why and who cares) and wears $10k dresses her boss/boyfriend selects and purchases for her to wear to high class events. Shallow, boring, and the plots are going nowhere. Kind of like Heroes, I kept waiting for a cohesive storyline, but it never formed. Typically try to read an entire series, but I'm finally calling it quits.
